Project Outline

We were approached by Celtic Football Club in early April 2024 to seek a proposal and cost for the replacement of the South Stand metal roof, which had been experiencing leaks and ingress over an ongoing period.

The roof (3,000m2) was originally installed as part of a re-development in 1988 and consisted of a steel frame structure with the roof covering both the main open seated area of the stand and also a large section of internal stadium facilities. Our proposals included a diagnosis of issues, design, specification of products and warranty, as well as considering several major constraints.

Outcome

The key tasks included in this project was removing the old metal sheets, treating the steel purlins with anti-corrosion paint, and installing new hand-bent roof sheets to match existing polycarbonate sections. Other works included installing a new membrane lining system for gutters and sealing penetrations around steel structures.

Challenges arose due to the unavailability of the original roof sheet profile, requiring custom manufacturing. The project team faced logistical constraints, such as weight limits on the roof, restricted space, and other concurrent projects at the stadium. The work needed to be completed within an 8-week period, with strict adherence to timelines to avoid delays in the football season.

To ensure safety, specialised rope access operatives installed safety netting, and crane operations were carefully coordinated. Meticulous planning and communication with other contractors were critical to managing health, safety, and environmental concerns. Despite the challenges, the project was completed successfully, on time, and to a high standard of workmanship.
