Thermal roof surveys are non-destructive roof diagnostics carried out using infra-red technology. A thermal roof survey will identify anomalies within your roof and quickly show defective roof areas harbouring faults.
The inspection of flat roofs (especially built-up roofs) has proven to provide positive results for a number of years.
The technique allows for the detection of moisture trapped in the roof system. Over time, the moisture leads to premature degradation of the roof membrane, insulation and general roof integrity. Data gathered can provide evidence whether to repair or replace the roof.
How it works - As the sun applies heat during a clear day, the dry roof reaches a higher temperature than the wet defective area of the roof due to its lower thermal capacitance.
At night, the dry roof temperature depresses faster than the wet area. A thermal inversion occurs about 1-2 hours after sunset and the wet roof has a higher temperature than the dry roof. Therefore, for best results, the survey should be carried out late evening.
